NovaKane (formerly, Kane and the Almost Ables) was born, on the tail end of the pandemic, with a group of lifelong musicians itching to get back out playing live music. Hitting the local (DC Metro Area) open mic scene, the group was brought together by Matt (guitarist & vocalist), and instantly hit it off!
Mackenzie "Mack" Ryan - Lead Vocals
Matt Edgar - Lead Guitar & Vocals
Brian Callery - Rhythm Guitar & Vocals
Tom Hyland - Bass Guitar & Vocals
Colson Thompson - Drums & Percussion
Lauren Kane - Founding Member
Prepare to be captivated by the vocal wizardry of NovaKane's lead singer, Mack! Seriously, this isn't your typical cover band experience. Whether belting out a rock anthem or pouring her heart into a unique twist on nostalgic favorites, Mack's passion is contagious... and will have you hooked from the first note.
But Mack is more than just a singer – she's a force of nature! A professionally trained vocalist, self-taught multi-instrumentalist, and budding producer, her talents know no bounds. Those talents have even shared the stage with renowned artists like Jason Morton and The Chesapeake Sons, Nick Norman, Lewis Brice, Phil Vassar, Michael Ray, and Montgomery Gentry!
Don't just take our word for it, come see for yourself at one of Mack's solo gigs, or come experience the band's electrifying synergy at one of NovaKane's shows. One thing's for sure – you're in for an unforgettable show!
Matt started playing guitar in 8th grade to impress girls. It didn’t work. However, Matt fell in love with writing & performing music and has been rockin ever since! Matt loves creating unique mashups of classic rock and hip hop songs, which he frequently incorporates into the band's setlist. His musical claim to fame is opening for Lil Kim in 2009.
Like Matt, Brian starting playing guitar very young... but it wasn't until he found a teacher, who taught guitar through songs his students loved, that Brian really found his passion for music. As a teenager, Brian began writing and played in his first band. In college, he joined forces with another singer/songwriter and started gigging seriously as an acoustic duo. His musical claim to fame is the acoustic duo he played (and recorded an album) with throughout college was Brian & Wesley Schultz - current front man for The Lumineers.
A 5 year old, Tom first heard AC/DC’s Thunderstruck while riding in his dad’s old Ford - and knew that he must rock. Tom began playing guitar and drums in the 3rd grade. In high school, Tom played guitar and sang in a Hair Metal cover band (ironic) with tens of MySpace fans. When he got to college, Tom began to experiment with piano (a bit of mandolin, ukulele, and even some harmonica). It wasn’t until he started doing theremin that he realized he had a problem. As a recovering multi-instrumentalist, Tom recorded two solo EPs and has played with a variety of ensembles - from church choirs, to a hip hop trio, and a progressive rock band. Tom has also been performing as a one-man-band, using his guitar looping station to put his own spin on popular songs and mash-ups. He first met Lauren, Matt, and Brian at an open mic night. Bored playing "the usual," Tom picked up his bass and joined NovaKane, bringing his flair for the absurd to every performance. Tom loves long walks on the beach, tasty riffs, and fat beats. Tom's claim to fame was his appearance on Oprah.
Colson first fell in love with music through his church’s worship band, and music has been part of Colson’s life ever since. Much to the chagrin of his parents, Colson taught himself how to play percussion the way most young musicians do - listening to music on full blast.
In 8th grade, Colson’s Mom bought him his first drum set (she immediately regretted the decision!). After months of teaching himself to play, it finally clicked and noise turned to music.
In high school, Colson was in the marching band, playing the marimba in the percussion ensemble. In college, he brought his talent to VMI, where he led the drum line. With the VMI band, Colson traveled the country and also marched in an inauguration parade.
Colson lives in Falls Church with his dog, Marshall, and can be found wherever there’s a live band... but watch out, he’ll ask to play a song.
With a hair flip for the A-List, and the main "Kane" behind our name - meet our founding member, Lauren!
Music has always been a part of Lauren's life. Once a professional singer, Lauren changed course for a corporate "gig." Her busy schedule didn't leave much time to focus on music but Lauren's desire to start performing again only grew. Thankfully, as the pandemic restrictions were easing, the music gods intervened... when Matt reached out.
If she was going to be performing again, it was important to find a band that she clicked with on a personal level and one that was serious about their music. Luckily, with NovaKane, Lauren found the perfect fit and, though she's moved away, Lauren's still very much a part of our DNA!
